Gout is a type of joint disease that causes sudden, sharp pain in the joints. It happens when needle-like formations build up in the joint cavity. This build-up triggers inflammation and pain. Gout most often strikes the big toe, but it can also occur in other joints such as the ankles, knees, elbow
